Heavy haulage transport in Australia is subject to numerous regulations designed to protect our infrastructure and ensure the safety of other road users. Here’s what you need to know:
Weight and Size Restrictions
Every truck has restrictions on how much weight it can legally carry, so if you’re sourcing your own truck you’ll need to make sure it’s suitable for carrying the intended load. The easiest way to check these weight restrictions is by talking to a reputable heavy haulage service provider.
What Is An Oversized Load?
Oversized loads are those that exceed the standard legal size and/or weight limits for a specified section of road. Vehicles carrying oversize loads come in all shapes and sizes, but if you’ve ever found yourself stuck behind one on the freeway you’ll know that they are typically very wide and very slow.
Vehicles carrying oversized loads are subject to a lot of extra regulations, so if it’s possible to dismantle the load into smaller components you could save yourself time and money.
Determine if You Need an Escort
Oversized vehicles often need to be accompanied by one or more Heavy Vehicle Pilots, who will alert other road users to the presence of the oversized vehicle, direct traffic if necessary, and forewarn the driver of any hazardous road conditions.
If your oversized vehicle exceeds 5.5 metres in width and/or 40 metres in length it may also need to be accompanied by a Traffic Escort Warden. The services of both Heavy Vehicle Pilots and Traffic Escort Wardens can be engaged from Main Roads WA.
In order to legally transport heavy freight on the roads, you will need to obtain Restricted Access Vehicle permits from Main Roads WA. Permits can be obtained for a single trip or for a period of up to 3 years, but you will need to show that you have met a variety of operating rules and regulations before they can be issued.
Know the Restrictions
In addition to requiring traffic escorts, oversized vehicles cannot travel on public holidays or in metropolitan areas during peak traffic hours. Travelling at night is also highly restricted. The driver/operator of the oversized vehicle needs to display appropriate warning lights and must have a fully surveyed route mapped out prior to setting off.
