What Are The Dangers Of Oversized Trucking

This article was published on: 08 Sep 2021

When we tell people we are in the trucking business, we are often quizzed about the dangers involved in our daily work. For over a decade, we have been servicing Australian industries with their heavy haulage needs. And this time has given us a tonne of hands-on experience on the job, and we can easily see if this work was left in the hands of someone less qualified, it could be a recipe for disaster.

Firstly, what are oversized loads?

An oversized load is any load exceeding the maximum legal width, height, and or length as defined by Australian state regulations

You mightn’t see a heavy haulage truck so much in the CBD, but take a drive out rural; you’ll most likely spot a heavy haulage truck carrying large goods or pieces of machinery accompanied by a fleet.

Why do you need specialised trucks?

Depending on what you need to transport, there are different trucks for the job. For example, our fleet includes prime movers, flat top trailers, drop deck trailers and floats to move loads of various sizes across Perth and interstate.

With this fleet, we are able to transport loads of over 190 tonnes, up to 9.5 metres wide and up to 55 metres long. This includes road graders, excavators, cranes, bulldozers, watercraft, forklifts, front-end loaders, farm machinery, structural equipment, B-trains and road trains.

You not only need a specialist truck to be able to transport these sized goods, but an experienced team along with it to ensure they are delivered on time, securely and safely.

What are the dangers of oversized trucking in Australia?

Heavy haulage trucks are harder to control, need more braking distance and have larger blind spots. Can you imagine if the next time you jumped behind the wheel, you had all the hindrances?

With these into consideration, there are plenty of potential issues and risks a team could run into while transporting oversized loads

Heavy haulage trucks can be more susceptible to rollover accidents due to the weight and size of the oversized load. Particularly when making sharp turns or speeding, it is harder for the driver to control the speed and movement of the truck.

Oversized loads often take up the majority of the road width, block lanes and impede traffic. Whilst some extra congestion isn’t a huge risk, other drivers on the road aren’t expecting this delay and can get frustrated. This is where it is essential for patience and tolerance from other drivers on the road.

Under no circumstances should a vehicle attempt to overtake a turning truck. Trucks, especially oversized loads, need more space to turn and often take up an additional lane to do so. There have been too many fatalities on our roads due to drivers not giving trucks enough space to turn or stop, so let’s make sure we don’t see anymore on our roads!
